Summer Reading List

Fulton County Schools provides the following resource suggestions to encourage our students to continue reading during their summer vacation. We strive to provide various resources for all students and partner with companies who graciously donate free simultaneous use e-books and audiobooks to broaden the scope and selections for this endeavor.

All books shown are optional reading and are not part of a class assignment. Parents are welcome and encouraged to preview books before giving them to their children to read in order to determine whether the book is the right fit for their child.

Announcements

Oakley’s Podcast is a student-led show featuring a group of 3rd grade students who come together to interview and get to know the people who make their school special—peers, principals, teachers, and staff at Oakley. Through fun, thoughtful questions, students explore the stories, interests, and experiences of their guests, building community and understanding. The podcast encourages curiosity, empathy, and the idea that the best way to learn about others is simply to ask. By giving students a voice and a platform, Oakley’s Podcast helps strengthen connections across the school and inspires both listeners and participants to be open, engaged, and welcoming. As the show’s motto goes: you never know unless you ask!

Grab a backpack — and maybe a pair of garden gloves — and head to homeroom at Oakley Elementary School, where learning often looks more like a farm than a traditional classroom.

Chickens cluck as students rush to collect eggs. Butter churns as children chant encouragement. Sometimes, there isn't a classroom at all — just fresh air, soil under fingernails, and lessons rooted in real life.

At the center of it all is Tomanekka Irving, the school's STEM-agriculture teacher, whose class has become so popular that administrators say families have moved into the district specifically to enroll their children.

"Everybody wants to be a part of her class at some point," said Uche Ngoddy, the school's principal. "She is a child whisperer. You don't deal with discipline in her class because the kids love to be here."

Irving's approach blends science, agriculture, and hands-on discovery. Students garden, keep bees, and care for animals, learning through trial and error as much as through success.

"They're learning success, but they're also learning failure," Irving said. "We plant things and they don't grow. They're like, 'What happened?' So they're learning to keep going, keep persevering."
